Having Vision Without Sight
The Story of Martin G. Knight~
My Career as a Darkroom Technician
As I recall, I was 23 years old when I lost my sight completely that summer at Camp Berger. I was declared blind on March 15, 1967, and then lost it totally blind July, 1973.
This is the story of the day I discovered I could no longer see and the last thing I remember seeing.
Hello Group:
Yesterday, June 13, I made my annual trip to East Hampton Middle School and talked to the seventh graders. I talked to 180 students during six class periods. Joyce Weybright, their teacher came and picked me up and took me to the school as usual.
I thought for a moment and then answered by telling the class about the last thing that I saw.
In 1972, I ran the Camp Store at Camp Berger. The campers would put money for the store in an account and when they came to the store the amount that they spent was subtracted from their account. I kept what they spent on a cassette tape and each day I would record the information from the tape on to their cards in the Camp Office.
The cards were written with a dark Flare pen. One day when I was trying to write on to the cards my father noticed that I was having difficulties and he asked me what seems to be struggling you, Marty? I then told my father that I was having difficulty reading the cards to do my paper work. Then I told my father I cannot do it. I can no longer read the dark Flare pen and cannot record campers store amounts onto the cards and do the paper work.
He asked me What do you want me to do about this situation? I said, I do not know what to do. I know that I cannot do it and I can no longer see anything. He then said that he would take care of the paper work as long as I gave him the tapes.
Have a great day and take care.
Your friend, Marty Knight
